Sword Handle Cap (Fuchi) singed Tsuneshige
This is a fine antique metal cap (fuchi) of the handle of the Japanese sword. The base metal of the cap is brass (sentoku) with a surface that resembles finely textured stone (ishime-ji). Tsuneshige worked for the Nara School based in the Edo crica 1775 to 1800 CE.
The popular subject of the cap is the Japanese God Daikoku. This mallet is laid along rice bales next to a pine tree. Gold and copper-gold alloy (shakudō) is nicely inlayed to highlight and add contrast to the pine tree and mallet.
The cap is signed Tsuneshige. The cap (fuchi) measures 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) long by 2.1 cm (0.8 inches) wide. The condition is excellent.
