Sword Handguard (Tsuba) with Silver and Brass Inlays
This is an antique handguard (tsuba) made of forged iron with many silver and brass inlays. The brass inlays are in the design weeping cherry blossom tree. It was likely made by the Kaga Kinkō group during the early Edo Period circa early to mid-17th century. The handguard has an applied iron rim that is raised above the surface of the plate.
The handguard measures 6.7 cm (2.7 inches) wide by 7.0 cm (2.8 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.3 cm (0.1 inches) thick. The handguard is unsigned by the artist who made it. The condition for this antique sword handguard is very good with only one area where there is loss of some of the brass inlay on the front side (see first photograph).
