Sword Handguard (Tsuba) with Openwork (Sukashi) Design
This is an antique handguard (tsuba) made of forged iron. It has a large positive openwork (ji-sukashi) design. It is sized to fit a short sword (wakizashi). The handguard is the work of the Ono School of Owari Province where Edo is located circa the middle Edo Period early to mid-18th Century.
The handguard measures 6.7 cm (2.7 inches) wide by 7.1 cm (2.8 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) thick. It is unsigned by the artist who made it. The condition of this antique sword handguard is excellent.
