Sword Handguard (Tsuba) with Gold Inlays
This is an antique handguard (tsuba) made of forged iron with gold inlays. The design is of a rain dragon. It was likely made by the Kamakura-bori group during the early Edo Period circa early to mid-17th century. The handguard has an iron rim that is raised above the surface of the plate.
The handguard measures 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) wide by 7.4 cm (3.0 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) thick. The handguard is signed "清Ⓧ光". I am not sure what the second character is. The condition for this antique sword handguard is very good with only one area where there is loss of some of the brass inlay on the back side (see second photograph).
