Sword Handguard (Tsuba)
This is an iron antique handguard (tsuba) with no design on the iron of plate. It was likely made by an armorsmith (katchushi) or associated blacksmith during the early Edo Period circa the early to mid-17th Century. The handguard has a raised applied rim that is above the surface of the plate.
The handguard measures 6.7 cm (2.7 inches) wide by 7.0 cm (2.8 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.4 cm (0.2 inches) thick. The handguard was unsigned by the artist. The overall condition is particularly good. The only issue being the patina of along the rim is a bit worn in places likely due to over cleaning.
