Sword Handguard (Tsuba)
This is an iron antique handguard (tsuba) with no design on the iron of plate. It was likely made by an armorsmith (katchushi) or associated blacksmith during the mid to late Edo Period circa the early to mid-18th to the early 19th Centuries. The handguard has a raised and folded over rim that is above the surface of the plate.
The handguard measures 6.6 cm (2.6 inches) wide by 6.6 cm (2.6 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.6 cm (0.2 inches) thick. The handguard was unsigned by the artist. The overall condition is particularly good. The natural patina of the iron is nice with a few small minor scuffs along the rim and nicks on the plate.
