Iron Sword Handguard (Tsuba) with Openwork (Sukashi) of a Horse
This is an antique handguard (tsuba) made of a well polished forged iron. It has a large openwork (sukashi) design of a horse in profile. It is sized to fit a short sword (wakizashi). The handguard is likely the work of the Edo based Akao School circa the early to mid-18th Century.
The handguard measures 6.9 cm (2.7 inches) wide by 7.2 cm (2.8 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) thick. It was unsigned by the artist. The condition for this antique sword handguard is excellent.
