    This is an antique handguard (tsuba) made of forged iron. It has a large openwork (sukashi) design of a fish net. It is sized to fit a short sword (wakizashi). The handguard is likely the work of the Edo based Daigoro School circa the early to mid-19th Century.

      The handguard measures 6.9 cm (2.7 inches) wide by 7.1 cm (2.8 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) thick. It was unsigned by the artist. The condition for this antique sword handguard is excellent.
