Iron Sword Handguard (Tsuba) with Openwork (Sukashi) and Gold Insert
This is a large iron antique handguard (tsuba) with an abstract openwork (sukashi) designs with a gold insert. It was likely made by Saotome School during the Edo Period (~1615-1868 CE). The rim of handguard is nicely raised above the surface of the handguard.
The handguard measures 9.3 cm (3.7 inches) wide by 9.5 cm (3.7 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.4 cm (0.2 inches) thick. The handguard was unsigned by the artist. The condition is excellent.
