Iron Sword Handguard (Tsuba) with Openwork (Sukashi) and Brass Inlays
This is a large iron antique handguard (tsuba) with an abstract openwork (sukashi) design rimed with thick brass inlays. It was likely made by Heianjō-zōgan group in the cultural capital Kyōto circa the early Edo Period (~1615-1670 CE). The rim of handguard displays many prominent iron bones (tekkotsu).
The handguard measures 8.2 cm (3.2 inches) wide by 8.5 cm (3.4 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) thick. The handguard was unsigned by the artist. The condition is excellent.
