Iron Sword Handguard (Tsuba) with Brass Inlays
This is a iron antique handguard (tsuba) with fine brass inlays applied to the plate and the rim. It was likely made by Heianjō-zōgan group in the cultural capital Kyōto circa the Azuchi-Momoyama Period circa the late 16th Century to the early 17th Centruy. The rim of handguard is an applied seprate piece of forged iron that raises above the surface of the plate.
The handguard measures 7.2 cm (3.2 inches) wide by 7.5 cm (3.4 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.6 cm (0.2 inches) thick. The handguard was unsigned by the artist. The condition overall is very good with only minor loss of a few of the brass inlays along the rim.
