Iron Sword Handguard (Tsuba) Cup Shaped
This handguard (tsuba) made in a decorative cup shape. It is made of forge iron. This design became popular in southwestern Japan around the international seaport of Nagasaki and was pattern after the handguards used on Chinese sabers (pei-dao) during the 18th Century. This handguard likely dates from the middle Edo Period circa the early to late 18th Century.

The handguard measures 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) wide by 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 1.2 cm (0.5 inches) thick. The handguard is unsigned by the artist. The condition is excellent.
