Sword Handguard (Tsuba) with Heavily Hammered Surface
This is an antique handguard (tsuba) made of rough heavily hammered forged iron. The black lacquer (kuro-urushi) has been applied to the surface of the handguard. It is sized to fit a long sword (katana). The handguard is likely the work of the Myōchin School of armorsmith circa the late Edo Period early to mid-19th Century.
The handguard measures 8.2 cm (3.2 inches) wide by 8.7 cm (3.4 inches) high. The rim of the handguard is 0.8 cm (0.3 inches) thick. It was unsigned by the artist. The condition of this antique sword handguard is excellent.
