Framed Utagawa Kuniyoshi Woodblock Print
This is a framed woodblock print (ukiyo-e) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi from his series entitled 'Biographies of the Loyal Retainers' first published in 1847 CE. The scene depicted in the print is that of Jinzaburō a loyal retainer of the roinin Shikamatsu Kanroku. He helped his master take final revenge on lord Kira for the dishonor and death of their lord Asano.
The wood block print measures 30.5 cm (12.0 inches) wide by 40.6 cm (16.0 inches) long. The frame itself measures 50.5 cm (19.9 inches) wide by 60.7cm (23.9 inches) long. Overall the condition of the woodblock print is excellent for its age. There is some age associated foxing of the paper in a few places but no major damage or conditions issues to report. The natural colors are still very vivid in the print. I would estimate the woodblock print dates from the Meiji Period circa 1868 - 1912 CE. The print is signed and stamped by the artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi and the publisher.
