Antique Decorative Satsuma Bowl
This is an antique Satsuma-yaki style decorative bowl. There are two scene one is on the inside surface of the bowl and the other on onside surface of the bowl. The inside surface of the bowl shows a scene country road being traveled by a group of geisha. The outside surface of the bowl shows a scene of a village in Autumn along the red maple trees. Both scenes are done in the classical Satsuma style which incorporates thick polychrome enameling and liquid gold (suikin) over a plain white cracked glaze. It would make a wonderful display piece.
Product Information
The decorative bowl measures 15.5 cm (6.1 inches) diameter and 7.0 cm (2.8 inches) high. It has a hand painted mark on the bottom of the bowl ‘Senzan’ which is the name of the kiln workshop that made the bowl. This indicates that it was made after about 1880 CE. No damage the condition of the bowl is excellent for its age.
