Large Accessory Knife (ō-kogatana) signed Sakai Ikkansai Shigemasa


This is a large accessory knife (ō-kogatana) signed Sakai Ikkansai Shigemasa a NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyokai) certified master swordsmith (mukansa) and one the 20th century most important swordsmiths. He began his apprenticeship as a swordsmith in 1925 CE and became fully licensed in 1932 CE. He lived from 1905-1995 CE. Demographic information is taken from Index of Japanese Swordsmiths by Markus Sesko.

The temper pattern (hamon) shows a straight (suguha) style. The temper pattern itself is made of very fine invisible crystals of martensite (nioi). Above this the temper pattern is the very fine forging pattern (ji-hada) of the steel. In addition to the signature it was dated 53rd year of the Shōwa Period (1978 CE) on an auspicious day of the 6th month.

    The accessory knife is signed Sakai Ikkansai Shigemasa. The cutting-edge length (nagasa) is 14.2 cm (5.7 inches). The overall length is 21.7 cm (8.7 inches). In comes in a pain wooden storage scabbard (shira-saya) and solid silver blade collar (habaki). The condition is excellent.
