Accessory Knife (kogatana) signed Masahira
This is an accessory knife (kogatana) signed Masahira. He was a pupil of master swordsmith Miyairi Akihira. The temper pattern (hamon) shows a style consisting of undulating waves (midareba). The temper pattern itself is made of very fine iinvisible crystals of martensite (nioi) with the addition of large visible crystals of martensite (nie) appearing on top. Above this the temper pattern is the very fine forging pattern (ji-hada) of the steel. Based upon the inscription on the back of the blade it was made for the 60th anniversary of the Fukushima Prefecture southern branch of the NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyokai).
The accessory knife is signed Masahira. The cutting-edge length (nagasa) is 11.8 cm (4.7 inches). The overall length is 19.0 cm (7.6 inches). The knife blade has been recently polished by a professional Japanese sword polisher. The condition is excellent.
