Orphan Sword Handle Set
This is a fine antique orphan metal cap (fuchi) and handle ornament (menuki) of the Japanese sword. The base metal of the cap is the copper-silver alloy (shibuichi) with a smooth surface (migaki-ji). The cap was made by someone using the name Masayoshi and signed with a cypher (kaō). I am unsure of the authenticity of the signature but the workmeship is top qaulity. I would estimate they were made sometime during the late Edo Period (circa late 18th to mid-19th Century).
The subject of the cap is a crane in a bamboo grove and handle ordament a bird. The detail of the crane and bamboo inlayed very nicely in gold (kin) and copper-gold alloy (shakudō). The handle ordament is made of refined copper.
The cap was signed by someone using the named Masayoshi along with a cypher (kaō). The cap (fuchi) measures 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) long by 2.3 cm (0.9 inches) wide. The condition of the fuchi and menuki is very good with only minor loss to one of the gold inlays on the bamboo leaf on fuchi.
